X-Man New Mutants Sequel May Take Place in Brazil
The New Mutants may feature a batch of characters most audience members won’t be familiar with, but the movie’s horror vibe and up-and-coming cast could make it a sleeper hit when it arrives in the spring of next year. We’ve already heard The New Mutants could be a trilogy, meaning the minds behind the films surely have plenty of ideas for where to head next. And though the first movie looks to be entirely contained within an insane asylum, the sequel could see the new team of heroes head out into the world.
Omega Underground is reporting from Comic Con Experience 2017 in Brazil, where they reveal that The New Mutants director Josh Boone is enticing the audience with his possible franchise heading to the country.
While it may just seem like fan service for the Brazilian audience, there’s actually plenty of reason to believe Boone is telling the truth. There’s no telling what the future of The New Mutants is at this point, but the team’s international roster of heroes could allow it to have a globetrotting feel once the demons of the first film are dealt with. As for why Brazil seems likely, that’s the home of Roberto da Costa, also known as Sunspot.
Sunspot previously appeared in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but the franchise is doing what it does best and introducing a new take on the hero in The New Mutants. Roberto will be played by Henry Zaga from 13 Reasons Why and Teen Wolf. The film will naturally allow much more of the character to be explored, meaning a journey to his home country in the future could make sense.
If The New Mutants continues the trend, the third film in the trilogy could feature the team heading to Magik’s Russia or Wolfsbane’s Scotland. X-Men films are generally more globally focused than other superhero movies, and it makes sense given the diverse background of the many mutants in the comics. But with most blockbusters set in the U.S. or Europe, it would certainly be exciting to see places like South America play a prominent role. First, however, The New Mutants needs to prove it has legs.
