Sony’s Animated Spider-Man Movie Title Revealed; Trailer Coming Soon

Sony’s upcoming animated Spider-Man film may be titled Animated Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, and the trailer is set to arrive soon. December 2018 will see a whole new Spider-Man franchise make its box office debut – this time not fronted by Peter Parker.

Instead, Miles Morales is headed to the big screen for the first installment in what will hopefully be a long line of animated adventures. Although Sony’s kept details about the film under wraps until now, it looks as though that’s about to change.

The Alberta Film Classification recently rated a trailer for the movie, awarding it an unsurprising “G” rating, and in the process possibly revealed that the movie is called Animated Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. Previously, co-writer Chris Miller teased a big animated Spider-Man movie announcement. Plus, Sony Pictures promised the first footage from the film will be unveiled at Brazil Comic-Con this weekend. So, it seems this Into the Spider-Verse trailer will debut at CCXP, but it remains to be seen when it’ll hit the internet.

The movie’s title that will leave fans thrilled. “Spider-Verse” was the brainchild of popular comic book writer Dan Slott. He decided to launch possibly the most ambitious Spider-Man story of all time. The high-level concept was simple: Slott aimed to unite every single Spider-Man ever created. The story embraced the Marvel Multiverse like no other arc before it. It featured so many key Spider-Men, including (of course) Miles Morales.

But the title suggests that Sony is looking beyond Miles himself. “Spider-Verse” essentially redefined the Spider-Man brand. It reintroduced fan-favorites such as Spider-Man 2099. It gave characters like Spider-Woman and Silk a chance to shine. And it introduced a whole host of new spiders, including Spider-Gwen. It seems we can safely assume that Spider-Gwen will be making her big screen debut in Into The Spider-Verse. Created by Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez as part of the “Spider-Verse” event, Gwen took the world by storm. Marvel wasted no time in commissioning an ongoing series, which still continues to this day.

Marvel used “Spider-Verse” as a springboard to launch a wide range of new Spider-Man titles. Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Woman, and Silk all featured in new ongoing series. No doubt Sony hopes to repeat that success. If the animated movie performs well at the box office, we’d expect sequels to explore new corners of the Multiverse. That means we could conceivably be seeing this film set up a Spider-Gwen movie, or a Spider-Man 2099 film. The possibilities are literally endless.

It comes as no surprise that this animated adventure has been given a “G” rating, of course. Sony clearly wants the film to be family-friendly. Liev Schreiber, who plays an as-yet-unidentified villain, explained that he signed on to the film because he wanted to make something his kids could watch. He’s described this movie as having a “throwback vibe,” so it’s sure to be tremendous fun.

Now the trailer’s been rated and presumably set to debut at CCXP this weekend, it can’t possibly be long until we get to see it for ourselves. When we do, we’ll be able to get a sense of just which spiders will guest star in Miles’s box office debut.
