Shazam! Director Promises Plenty More Casting News Coming

Director David F. Sandberg posts a photo highlighting the massive cast of Shazam! After the highs of Wonder Woman, confidence in the future of DCEU movies has taken a bit of a stumble following the mixed response to Justice League, and the reports of major recasts. Luckily that hasn’t stopped the director of Shazam! from continuing to have fun with social media, as he posts updates and teases about the film during production.

Sandberg made good use of social media when he was promoting his previous movie, the hit horror flick Annabelle: Creation. His appointment as the director of Shazam! has only encouraged him to make greater use of it as all the elements of the film are pulled together. He recently posted a tweet mocking the rumors that he had been fired from the movie, as well as hilariously responding directly to a similar rumor on Reddit. Sandberg has also dropped some mischievous posts linking Batman to the film, and is more than prepared to gently spoof the DCEU to some extent.

However, his latest post on Instagram literally indicates the start of something big and puts the movie into perspective. It shows an office wall covered in question marks, apart from three photos. Those are of actors Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, and Jack Dylan Grazer, who have already been cast in the film. That leaves at least – as far as we can see in the photo – another 71 spaces to fill. Sandberg adds some text with the image citing the most recent addition of Grazer. You can check out the post below:

If you take the photo at face value, there’s a lot more casting news to look forward to. Levi is of course playing Captain Marvel/Shazam, with Angel playing his young alter-ego Billy Batson. The most recent casting was Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Billy’s best friend. However, it’s worth noting that there’s no representation on that wall yet for Mark Strong or of actress Grace Fulton, both of whom were previously reported to be tapped for pivotal roles in the film. But it’s very likely that Sandberg’s photo will now be used on a regular basis and updated to reflect official additions to the cast, so expect to see some more faces – possibly familiar ones or ones seen before in the DCEU – to replace at least some of those question marks as time goes on.

Sandberg has promised that his version of this classic DC character will be a fun ride, and Levi recently described the film as being close in tone to the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The tale of a boy being transformed into a superhero by uttering that title word has great potential, especially with all the mythology that comes with it, and could go some way to reinvigorating the DCEU if it performs as well as hoped. We’ll bring you more updates on Shazam! as we get them.
