Big Little Lies Season 2 Confirmed With New Director
The series was based on the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, was directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and produced by lead actresses Reese Witherspoon and Kidman. The plot centers around three mothers – Madeline Mackenzie (Witherspoon), Celeste Wright (Kidman) and Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley) – who live in the wealthy town of Monterey and have differing issues within their marriages, relationships and families. When a murder suddenly occurs during trivia night at the public school, where all the mother’s children attend, their secrets and lies are brought to life looking back at the weeks before the crime was committed. While Big Little Lies was only supposed to be a limited series, there have been rumors swirling around since its massive success at the Emmys that a second season was in development at HBO.
Variety now confirms the exciting news that there will be a season 2 of Big Little Lies, with most of the original cast set to reprise their roles along with a new director: Andrea Arnold. The new report also confirms some plot details about season 2, the direction the series is going in and more. Here is what Kidman said about the series returning with Arnold at the helm:
“This is inspired by the overwhelming response by audiences around the world, conceived once again by Liane Moriarty, realized by David Kelley and now in the hands of visionary filmmaker Andrea Arnold. What a journey this has been. I’m so grateful to have this opportunity to keep exploring these female characters and make this series with my friends.”
Arnold first won an Academy Award for her short film Wasp in 2005, and later moved on to direct feature films and television episodes including Red Road, Fish Tank, American Honey and the Amazon original series Transparent. Witherspoon also released a statement about her excitement to work with Arnold and what she’s hoping season 2 of Big Little Lies will accomplish. Here is what she said:
“I’m thrilled to be bringing back this talented team of artists. It gives us the opportunity to delve deeper into the lives of these intriguing and intricate Monterey families and bring more of their stories back to the audience who embraced and championed them. I’m beyond excited to be working with talented and acclaimed director Andrea Arnold who will be at the helm. Andrea’s unique storytelling style will be a welcome addition to the filmmaking team.”
HBO also confirmed that the second season will explore the “malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting” and that “relationships will fray, loyalties will erode [and] the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom,” which is not surprising for a series that portrayed the real-life and graphic truth behind domestic violence with Kidman’s and Skarsgård’s characters and their toxic marriage. David E. Kelley will return to write all seven scripts, which will be loosely based on a story by Liane Moriarty, and he will also executive produce along with Kidman, Witherspoon and others.
