Crisis on Earth-X Unites Over 20 Superheroes In One Scene

It seems like The CW is really upping the ante in this year’s crossover between Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow – not just in terms of stakes and scope, but apparently as well as in spectacle with a single sequence in the upcoming special bringing together at least 20 superheroes on the small screen.

The upcoming crossover, titled ‘Crisis on Earth-X’, will mine narrative beats from the upcoming animated series Freedom Fighters: The Ray. This means that DC’s small screen heroes will find themselves going up against their villainous selves from Earth-X, an alternate reality where the Nazis won World War II, which explains the existence of Nazi Supergirl and Green Arrow. Unfortunately, the alternate versions of our good guys could not come at a worse time with Barry and Iris’ long-awaited wedding set to be the stage these villains will crash.

During a recent set visit, Legends of Tomorrow star Brandon Routh opened up about his arc in this year’s DCTV special, as well as the intricate process of bringing all these popular characters to life in a two-night crossover event. During the conversation, he also teased one specific scene he claims will feature more than 20 superheroes:

“I have a limited adventure in the crossover, but I do get to work with a few people that we had a good time. The best thing that we got to do was the big gathering of everyone here in our world, on the Waverider, which was pretty awesome to have all of those superheroes together, and it was a really unique and fun thing, which I think the audience will like as well.

We used to get upset about having nine characters on the bridge and figuring out how to shoot that, but having 21 or whatever it was is pretty insane. But Greg Smith, who was our director for our episode, knew what he wanted pretty quick. You have to have your ducks in a row when doing a crossover because people are coming from four different shows, like, ‘We have Melissa for two hours and we have Grant for an hour, and we have Stephen for 30 seconds,’ so you’ve gotta get the shot!”

From the looks of it, Routh did not just pull that random number out of thin air as several other cast members have also said the same thing, with some even going up as high as 35 heroes on that bridge. What is unclear is if supporting characters who will make an appearance in the TV event are considered in the tally, otherwise, that must really be such a sight to behold and is something that fans of the four CW series will be looking forward to.

Chances are, however, that the jam-packed scene will not take place on the second night of the crossover as we expect this sequence to be the crowning glory of the four-show crossover. The synopsis for Crisis on Earth-X night one sounds like it is just going to set up the whole spectacle, starting with what appears to be Barry and Iris’ gatecrashed wedding.

The CW’s special ‘Crisis On Earth-X’ Arrowverse event will air on Monday, November 27 and Tuesday, November 28.
